NBCC’s assessments are created through rigorous research, review, and revision by content experts. This includes the development of the new NBCC Code of Ethics Self-Assessment, which will launch in May 2024.
Ethics are central to safe and effective professional counseling. They lay the foundation for all our decision-making, both inside and outside client sessions. This self-assessment is designed to allow current and future counseling students, professionals, and faculty to ensure their understanding of the NBCC Code of Ethics.
The NBCC Code of Ethics Self-Assessment will be available through CCE Academy to students in participating programs at no cost. NBCC will provide a registration code to all participating campus coordinators. The self-assessment tool will also be available for NBCC continuing education credit to counseling professionals at a nominal fee.
“It is important for us to ensure counseling students, professionals, and faculty have the tools they need to make sure the NBCC Code of Ethics remains a living document that can be incorporated into courses far beyond the first semester,” says Callie Marino, Vice President of Credentialing and Quality Assurance at NBCC.
The NBCC Code of Ethics Self-Assessment will be structured as 50 multiple-choice questions, and each examinee will receive results across all sections of the NBCC Code of Ethics. The NBCC Ethics team is also exploring the potential future development of a situational judgment test (SJT) to assess a counselor’s competency in ethical decision-making. Stay tuned in as more information on this potential tool is available
“We hope this self-assessment will serve as a curriculum tool to help counseling faculty weave NBCC’s Code of Ethics throughout all core classes,” says Marino. “We recognize that they have so much on their plates. Any areas we can provide resources to help them focus on teaching is of utmost importance to us.”
